Psalm 23 – The Lord is my Shepherd

February 21, 2019 – I’ve been in a small bible study with a group of women for almost 14 years. These women are such a blessing. This year, we are studying Psalms 23 using a study book from www.lifeway.com. You know how it goes, “The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want.”

Psalms 23 goes on to talk about God’s attributes as a Shepherd and how He cares for us, His little lambs. While doing homework the first week, I was inspired to make a small lamb for each of the women.

Using an internet search for a pattern to down size, I got to work. Re-sawed some maple to 1/2″ thick and cut out a flock of little lambs on the new DeWalt scroll saw.

The “surprise ” is in the wood type. It wasn’t just normal maple from HD, but bird’s eye maple that my father-in-law sent me. The grain contains tiny knots the size of a small bird’s eyes. These little knots added a beautiful illusion of curly wool.

The sheep are finished with beeswax mineral oil paste recipe from toymakingplans.com for a rich, satin glow. I love this stuff! It is my new favorite.

I found the cutest tiny green gift bags at Target to gift the sheep and double as a nod to the green pastures.

At our Christmas Party, we converted a couple gals’ sheep to Christmas ornaments with a simple eye screw and some cloth ribbon!

Side benefits: During this project, I got accustom to the new DeWalt Scroll saw, worked out my bad blade-pushing habit, and got better about changing the blades out sooner. You’ll notice some burn marks on the first lamb from pushing the blade, but the others are burn-free. I kept the first lamb for myself. His dark edges remind me that I’m still in need of a Savior. 😇

Here’s how they turned out!
